The Linn Sondek LP12 often shortened to Sondek or LP12 is a transcription turntable [1] produced by Glasgow -based Linn Productsmanufacturers of hi-fi, home theatreand multi-room audio systems.

Linn Majik LP12 #1

Its name is derived from the 12" vinyl LP long play gramophone record. Hi-Fi Choice reviewers voted the LP12 "the most important hi-fi component ever sold in the UK" [2] and The Absolute Sound ranked it the second most significant turntable of all time in The Sondek LP12 turntable, introduced inuses a suspended sub-chassis design and a patented tightly-toleranced single-point bearing.

The LP12 has evolved since its introduction, but its basic suspended sub-chassis design has remained. The patent was opposed on various grounds, including that 'what was being claimed as new, was in fact old', and that the idea was 'lacking in inventive step' over what was already known.

Further grounds of opposition were that the invention had been 'obtained' from Hamish Robertson, and was his original idea rather than that of Jack Tiefenbrun. Hamish Robertson had a company called Thermac inwhich became Ariston inand Ariston Audio in In Jack's son Ivor formed a friendship with Hamish. In Ivor made a prototype turntable with a ball bearing, and then went to Israel.

While Ivor was away, Hamish changed the ball bearing to a single point bearing. Robertson's company Thermac then ordered forty of the turntables from Castle Precision Engineering Ltd. Inand now operating as Ariston, Hamish showed the turntable under the model name RD11 at the Harrogate show, and set up a distribution network with C.

Walker and Company. By the end of relations between Robertson and the Tiefenbruns had broken down. This allegedly led to a threat to Robertson that a copyright action would be brought against him if he had the RD11 turntable made elsewhere than at Castle Precision Engineering.

The thinking at the time was that the most important component of a high-end audio system is the loudspeakers. Linn presented an important challenge to that by claiming that the source i.

Ivor Tiefenbrun has talked about how Sondek derives from the word Soundex as each hi-fi design always ends up having its own unique identifiable and recognisable sound. Linn didn't invent the turntable, we simply understood that there was more information on an LP record than people were capable of accessing, so we applied our understanding of engineering to extracting it.

These changes include modifications to components such as the subplatter and bearing, rubber feet, baseboard, armboard, suspension springs and grommets and reinforced plinth.

I wanted both turntables to be mounted in plinths built to LP12 specifications, but struggled to find specifications or dimensions anywhere. I tried a number of Linn specialists and even Linn themselves to no avail.

With a great deal of research and a bit of trial and error I have managed to assemble a list of dimensions that do work to build a Linn plinth. They are published below in the hope that they will help future DIYers.

I will update this article if I should come across new information, but if any readers have attempted to do this or would care to measure their own LP12s and post the results in the comments below I would be interested to see your findings.

Dimensions for some the parts of TD are also given below. Plinths seem to range in height from anywhere between 61 — 70 mm. Long before the Swedes at Ikea did it, the singular Scotsman Ivor Tiefenbrun began giving his products funny-sounding names. For some reason positively phobic about the letter che banned its use in any of those names. Someone once told me his real last name is Tiefencrun, but since it wouldn't sound any different with a khe settled for a b. I'll never forget the evening of gourmet dining and right-wing dogma I shared with Tiefendrun last fall in a posh, lively Glasgow restaurant.

As I remember, he advocated: drilling for oil anywhere, the plus sides of global warming, and the certain and overwhelming economic benefits of huge tax cuts, enormous military spending increases, and all-of-a-sudden who-cares-about-deficits economics. But it was long ago, I'd had too much wine, and my recollection could be faulty, so don't hold me to any of it. It's also possible that, knowing my political proclivities, Tiefenzrun was just playing with me.

That's how I chose to take it.

I'm not talking about Ivor. I mean his original brainchild, the Sondek LP12 turntable. Though the LP12 was originally issued way back inuntil a few months ago I'd never heard one—just one of those odd gaps in experience that everyone has. Another for me is being rich. But while I'd not actually heard the LP12, I'd heard plenty about it, and for many an audiophile, that's more than enough to form an informed and authoritative opinion. I'd read the LP12 reviews over the years.Read about our review ethos and the meaning of our review badges.

Historical curio or living legend? Review Specs Discussion Hi-Fi Review. Linn Majik LP12 Turntable Hop to What is the Majik LP12? Sound Quality Verdict Scores.

What is the Majik LP12? The Linn Majik LP12 is a suspended, belt driven turntable… but there is a fair chance you probably knew that already. The LP12 joins a select group of products in the industry that have enjoyed lifespans far longer than might be reasonably considered the case, even judged by the more relaxed standards of two-channel rather than the breakneck pace of change with multi-channel devices. What is also noteworthy is that while this Majik specification unit looks superficially identical to the launch version, it is in fact rather different internally.

This means that there are a few considerations to be made in this review. I noted at the time that Clearaudio was deeply capable and used any number of very clever technical innovations to make a turntable that was hugely easy to live with.

There is also the small matter of the biblical specification options available for the Linn beyond the version you see here. Is the LP12 still a serious contender for your money in and if so, is this the best way to experience it? As noted, the Linn has changed considerably in the time it has been in production but most of the basic architecture of the design has remained unchanged.

At its core, the LP12 is a belt driven, suspended turntable with a wooden plinth and two-part metal platter topped off by a felt mat. The platter, main bearing and armboard are suspended on three coil springs hung from the top plate of the chassis. This ensures that a sub chassis is decoupled from the outside world while being linked together in order to keep the relationship between the two a constant. The advantage of suspending these components is that they are much less susceptible to interference from the outside world.

Interference that makes it to the plinth should be nullified or alleviated at the playing surface. The catch is that the suspension needs to be correctly set up to ensure that the platter is level and that the spring rate the measurement by which the springs move and the resistance they offer has to be set in such a way as to ensure the forces are equal — which does not mean that the springs themselves will be equal.
